27th August 2013 witnessed the maiden international  flight from Akanu Ibiam International Airport, long overdue IMO but let’s not dwell on that.  As The Ethiopian Airline, flight ET 930 which took off at 2.34pm (Nigerian time) ,  it opened a new window of economic opportunities for the South East as well as the South South regions of Nigeria.

Analysts expect boost in trade, tourism and industrialization. Already the Governor of Enugu State, Mr Sullivan Chime, has promised to locate a free trade zone at the 9th mile in Enugu which would be accessible to businessmen and investors. Besides, the international airport would help free-up Lagos Airport, already choked by excessive demand from travelers.  Foreign Direct Investment F.D.I to the region is expected to increase. These stakeholders would no longer need to go to Lagos, Port-Harcourt or Abuja to connect international flights thereby  reducing the cost of doing business. The property market in Enugu is expected to rise to about 150 per cent in value within the next 3 years.
